The Sugarhill Gang (UK Festival Exclusive)
Bestival are honoured to unveil an act so steeped in hip hop heritage that the word legends hardly seems enough. But then they were the first.
In 1979 as disco was in it's final death throes a new sound was emerging from the streets of cities across America and in particular the block parties of urban New York, it's name was hip hop.
Media savvy producer and record label owner Sylvia Robinson immediately realised that this vibrant exciting new form of music just wasn't getting the exposure it deserved and set out to find a group that would change all of that. She found The Sugarhill Gang and the rest as they say is history.
'Rappers Delight', officially the first rap record of all time, sampled the break from Chic's disco classic 'Good Times' and was an instant worldwide phenomenon. Master Gee, Wonder Mike and Bank Hank had gone from unknown underground DJs and MCs to being the flag bearers of the most important musical movements of the last century.
2008 sees them incredibly celebrating their 28th anniversary and doing so with a UK festival exclusive performance for you on the Bestival main stage.
So come find out what old school is really all about, altogether now "I said a hip hop, the hippie, the hippie, to the hip hip hop, a you don't stop the rock it to the bang bang boogie say up jumped the boogie to the rhythm of the boogie, the beat".
